Police in the United States have reported that three women are missing in Mexico after they crossed the border from the U.S. state of Texas in order to sell clothing at a market.

Mexican authorities are investigating the disappearance of the three women, identified as Marina Perez Rios, 48; her sister Martiza Trinidad Perez Rios, 47; and their friend Dora Alicia Cervantes Saenz, 53, after they crossed into Mexico on February 24, CNN has learned.

According to police sources consulted by CNN, these three women disappeared a week before four Americans were kidnapped in the Mexican city of Matamoros (Tamaulipas), two of whom were killed.

»SIGNIFICANT SECURITY THREAT» The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has urged its citizens to avoid traveling to Mexico during spring break because of »ongoing violence» in the country.

Drug cartel violence and other criminal activity pose a significant threat to the safety of anyone crossing into Mexico at this time,» said Steven McCraw, director of the DPS.

»We have a duty to inform the public about security, travel risks and threats. Based on the volatile nature of cartel activity and the violence we are seeing there; we urge people to avoid traveling to Mexico at this time,» he remarked.
