China’s Foreign Ministry has called on the United States to respect Honduras’ right to decide on its foreign policy, days after Honduran President Xiomara Castro announced the resumption of relations between the two countries.
»Any sovereign state has the right to independently choose to develop diplomatic relations with other countries, and other countries have no right to interfere,» Chinese ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Monday.
He said that in the event that Washington is proven to have exerted diplomatic pressure on Honduras, the U.S. statement that »each country decides its own foreign policy based on sovereignty» is just talk.
Wang therefore urged the US authorities to »seriously respect the right of all countries to independently decide their foreign policies and stop interfering in the sovereign affairs of countries».
Beijing has recalled that the United States established diplomatic relations with China »on the basis of the recognition of the one-China principle more than 40 years ago.» It also pointed out that 181 countries have established relations, so it welcomed the decision of the Government of Honduras.
»We are willing to establish and develop bilateral relations with Honduras on the basis of equality and mutual respect,» the spokesman said, before welcoming the fact that China has established relations with several Latin American countries in recent years.
