Mexico’s Secretary of Citizen Security, Rosa Icela Rodriguez, said Wednesday that authorities have identified at least eight people as responsible for the deaths of 39 inmates in a fire at a migrant center in Ciudad Juarez.

Of the suspects, two are federal agents, another person is a member of the National Migration Institute (INM), and the other five are security personnel hired by a private company, as reported by the newspaper ‘El Universal’.

We reprove the bad performance of servants», declared Icela, while assuring that »the facts will not be hidden nor will anyone be protected» and that she has promised to punish the violation of human rights.

She also informed that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) is in charge of the investigation, together with the prosecutor of the state of Chihuahua, who is accusing the suspects of homicide and damage to the property of others. However, as the investigation progresses, new charges could be added.

The specialized prosecutor for Human Rights, Sara Irene Herrerías, has indicated that this Thursday she will request the first four arrest warrants against some of those involved, reports the newspaper ‘El Sol de México’.

GUATEMALAN VICTIMS The Government of Guatemala has activated its emergency protocol, after Mexican authorities confirmed that 20 of the 39 dead were Guatemalan citizens. In addition, eight Guatemalan migrants are injured, six of whom are in critical condition.

The Central American country’s consular network, which has visited the injured, has indicated that all the victims from the Central American country are men between the ages of 18 and 51, according to a statement.

The president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, has ordered the country’s foreign minister to work in coordination with the Mexican government to thoroughly investigate what happened and find those responsible for the events.
