The U.S. Senate on Wednesday passed a bill that will end the national COVID-19 emergency declared by then-President Donald Trump on March 13, 2020.
With 68 votes in favor and 23 against, the bill has been supported by Republican party senators, and now it only remains for President Joe Biden to sign it to move forward.
A White House official has explained to the American media CNN that although Biden is »strongly opposed» to this bill, the administration already plans to end the emergency on May 11 this year.
According to this official, President Biden will not veto this resolution and »the administration will continue to work with the agencies to end the national emergency, always warning Americans who may be affected».
The Government announced last January 30 that it would put an end to the national emergency, three years after the virus first arrived on U.S. soil, in a letter signed by Biden in which he explained that this would give adequate time to medical centers to train personnel and establish new billing processes, avoiding collapses and long waiting lists.
