The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has proposed this Wednesday to recover the resources stolen in the framework of the corruption scandal of the state-owned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) and invest them in social programs.
The investigative bodies have to guarantee me and the Prosecutor’s Office has to guarantee this country that all those resources that were stolen are found, are reinvested in the State and we can put them in social programs for our people», he declared, as reported by the Venezuelan network Globovisión.
Maduro pointed out that this has to happen »sooner rather than later», since »it is a commitment» of the Executive. He also reiterated that »for weeks» he has been »personally directing» the investigation with »patience, with a lot of intuition and depth».
»We already have the confession of almost half of those captured of the misdeeds and thefts they were committing against our Republic (…) I am very indignant, let me tell you, I am indignant, almost filled with anger, with rage, in front of the corruption, of people that we gave them all our trust (…) and they ended up stealing from the people in such difficult circumstances», he asserted.
In addition, he assured that the authorities have »managed to capture a part of the wealth» of the ex-officials and businessmen captured for their alleged involvement in the corruption cases.
»They are formidable ill-gotten riches, just, as prosecutor William Saab said, we have only managed to capture a part of these riches: mansions here and there», he said. »We will have to find all this and the moment will come when those involved will tell the whole truth under the law and we will be able to show these multimillionaire assets», he added.
He has also indicated that the objective is to continue striking blows to the mafias and to reach the totality of those involved in the acts of corruption, since »the rest, the bulk, they have it hidden, they hid it, they hid it». I am going to act to the greatest depth as president», Maduro has promised.
