The ’38 North’ project, a US think tank led by the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University, has reported that North Korea may be nearing completion of construction of a new nuclear reactor at the Yongbyon complex in central North Korea.

According to the US group, employees have been observed working in a building adjacent to the Experimental Light Water Reactor, and an expulsion of water has been detected that would coincide with the testing of a cooling system for this type of reactor.

In addition, construction has begun on new structures at the Uranium Enrichment Plant, which could be used to extend the country’s uranium enrichment capabilities.

»Together, these two developments appear to reflect (North Korean leader) Kim Jong Un’s recent directive to increase production of fissile material to expand its nuclear weapons arsenal,» ’38 North’ explained in its statement.

Kim Jong Un visited a nuclear bomb factory this week, where he again reiterated his intention to expand North Korea’s nuclear weapons capabilities, claiming that they are ready to use them »anytime, anywhere».

In addition, on March 24, he confirmed the experimental launch of a »nuclear drone» into the Sea of Japan, which would aim to »stealthily infiltrate operational waters and create a large-scale radioactive tsunami».
