Authorities in Marseille have raised to three dead and twelve wounded the toll of a night in which there have been up to three separate shootings in various parts of the French town.
According to the Marseille Prosecutor’s Office in a statement, for the moment no link has been established between the three shootings, while the police point to drug trafficking as a possible motive for the events, reports BFM TV.
Two of the shootings occurred in the 15th district of Marseille, in the first of which four young people in their 20s were wounded. Later, around midnight, two people were killed and six others injured in another incident.
The third shooting, in the city’s 2nd arrondissement after midnight, left one dead and two wounded, one of them in a very serious condition. All three victims are youths under 16 years of age.
The Marseille Judicial Police is now treating these three shootings under the qualification of »organized gang murders, attempted murder in organized gang and association of criminals», details the Prosecutor’s Office.
»It is still early to determine who the targets were and why, what is the exact nature of these shootings. But what seems clear to me is that it is related to drug trafficking,» Frédérique Camilleri, chief of police of the department of Bouches-du-Rhône, told the microphones of BFM TV.
The mayor of Marseilles, Benoit Payan, has ventured to affirm that »international drug trafficking has returned to kill», and has placed at the disposal of the National Police and Justice all »the technical and human means» at the disposal of the City Council.
I ask the State to continue and intensify its efforts against international drug trafficking in Marseille. The fight against international drug trafficking will be a long one. It requires an even stronger mobilization (…) We must strongly attack the financial networks and the arms trade, now», said Payan on his official Twitter profile.
