The New York Police Department (NYPD) said Sunday that its officers are »prepared to respond» to protests planned before the appearance of former President Donald Trump following his indictment as part of an investigation into the alleged payment of a bribe to porn actress Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels.
A spokesman for the NYPD has indicated that the police are »on alert» and will remain »ready to respond as needed», although he has remarked that »there are no current credible threats to the city», as reported by the newspaper »The Hill».
The NYPD ensures that thousands of events, including First Amendment activities, are held safely in New York City each year,» he said, before adding that he will »make sure that everyone can peacefully exercise their rights.
Some Republicans, such as Representative MArjorie Taylor Greene, have already announced that they will participate in »a peaceful protest», while a few days ago they deployed barricades in front of the Manhattan courthouse.
The former president, who was indicted on Friday, denounced »political persecution and electoral interference»: »This has never been done before in the history of our nation», he said.
»From the moment I walked down the escalator at Trump Tower, and even before I was sworn in as your president of the United States, the Democrats of the radical left — the enemy of the working men and women of this country — have engaged in a witch hunt to destroy the ‘Make America Great Again’ movement,»’ Trump said.
His lawyers said, as reported by NBC, that they will appeal the indictment, since they argue that Trump »is a victim of the corrupt and distorted version of justice of the American system and of history».
