Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Pshidach on Monday welcomed the fact that »several» of the promised MiG-29 fighters are already being used by Ukraine, whose authorities last week lamented the »little» impact these fighter jets were having due to their age.
»Several MiG-29s have already been delivered to Ukraine, they are already helping them in the defense of the country. According to my information, the first part of this delivery process has already been completed,» Pshidach told radio station RMF24.
Poland and Slovakia have pledged to send at least thirty of these Soviet-made fighters, while another dozen of the fifty or so FA-50s purchased from South Korea should start arriving before the end of the year.
However, Ukrainian officials have acknowledged that the effectiveness of the MiG-29s is not as expected due to the fact that they are combat aircraft that are close to becoming obsolete. »We need modern multirole aircraft,» said Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuri Ignat.
Despite everything, Pshidach has stressed that Poland will continue to send Ukraine military aid, which, he emphasized, must arrive in faster ways and in much larger quantities. »The sooner these teams arrive from Western Europe and the United States the sooner in Ukraine they will be ready,» he said.
»It is true that the Russians have older tanks, but they have not a few, but several thousand. So it is good that this coalition has been created and maintained in Western Europe, but this equipment must be delivered in much larger quantities and much faster so that Ukraine can repel Russia,» he has claimed.
