The Taliban claimed Tuesday to have killed six members of the jihadist group Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) during a new security operation in the northern Afghan city of Balj.
Provincial security spokesman Mohamed Asif Waziri said the operation took place during Monday night and early Tuesday morning and lasted several hours, Tolo News television reported.
ISKP, which considers the Taliban as traitors to the orthodoxy of ‘sharia’ or Islamic law and advocates a much harsher interpretation, has been the target of a security campaign by the Taliban. The jihadist group has carried out dozens of attacks since the Taliban seized power in August 2021 after the then Afghan president Ashraf Ghani fled the country in the face of their military advance on the capital.
