The number of unfilled jobs in the United States fell below the 10 million vacancy threshold last February for the first time since May 2021, according to Labor Department data.
Thus, the number of unfilled jobs in the U.S. in February was 9.93 million, down from 10.56 million the previous month and 11.6 million in February 2022.
In the private sector, the number of unfilled positions decreased to 8.93 million from 9.53 million in January, while 995,000 jobs were vacant in the public sector, down from 1.02 million in the previous month.
By sector, the largest declines in job openings were in professional and business services (-278,000); health care and social assistance (-150,000); and transportation, warehousing and utilities (-145,000). Job openings increased in construction (+129,000) and arts, entertainment, and recreation (+38,000).
The number of job resignations also decreased in February, when it stood at 5.82 million, compared to 5.9 million in January and 6.07 million a year earlier.
Voluntary resignations increased mainly in professional and business services (+88,000) and construction (+69,000).
