The President of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez has confirmed that Argentina has made official its return to the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), after leaving in 2019, during a visit this Wednesday to Chile where he met with his Chilean counterpart, Gabriel Boric.

»Today we already formalized the entry to UNASUR. Brazil, if I am not mistaken, will be doing the same tomorrow, and I have raised to President Boric that we have to work together to recreate UNASUR, but the one of these times, not the UNASUR of other times», he said during a press conference at the Chilean presidential palace, according to the newspaper ‘La Nación’.

Fernandez had already announced his intention to rejoin the group to try to »revitalize it», assuring that it would be a key point for unity in several areas of the Latin American countries that form it.

»We have to guarantee a UNASUR that serves the economic development of our peoples, where we see how to integrate Chilean, Argentine, Brazilian and other countries» companies’, added Fernandez.

Former Argentine President Mauricio Macri announced in 2019 his country’s exit from the regional organization, citing »high ideological content» as his main reason.

CHILE AND ARGENTINA CELEBRATE BILATERAL RELATIONS Fernandez is on an official visit to Chile on Wednesday, where she wanted to commemorate the country’s independence, won in a battle on April 5, 1818 with the help of Argentina.

In a joint communiqué, both presidents highlighted the commercial relationship between both countries, praising the coordination in the shipments of natural gas from Argentina, as well as the joint work on Human Rights and »the determination to continue working towards the normalization and optimal functioning of the border crossings».
