The Chinese Government has informed that next Sunday navigation in waters north of Taiwan will be prohibited due to the possible fall of rocket debris, an unexpected warning to which countries in the area have demanded more details.
The Maritime Safety Administration of China’s Fujian region has issued the warning, which will be in effect from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (local time). During this period, ships will not be able to access designated waters in the South China Sea, according to official media.
On Wednesday, Chinese authorities had already notified countries in the region of the establishment of a no-fly zone in the same area. Beijing then warned of »aerospace activities» and local media speculated on the possible launching of a satellite.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Transport has stated that this no-fly zone, in effect for 27 minutes, will affect 33 flights. According to the minister, Wang Kuo Tsai, Beijing initially revised its intention to ban flights for three days following complaints from Taipei, reports CNA.
Japanese government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno confirmed that Tokyo will ask Beijing for more details on the latest warnings, according to Japan’s Kiodo news agency. Part of the waters where sailing will theoretically be prohibited on Sunday fall within Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
