Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard has assured that Mexico is the »main ally» of the United States in the fight against fentanyl, a drug of the opiate family that is extremely addictive and has caused a growing wave of overdose deaths in the United States in recent years.
His remarks come a day before a Mexican delegation is due to meet with senior officials from the U.S. and Canadian governments in Washington to address the issue and outline a joint plan to curb the illegal trafficking of fentanyl and weapons in North America.
Ebrard has expressed that the priority for the country is to curb arms trafficking from the United States in order to »reduce the maneuvering capacity of criminal organizations and increase security in our communities,» according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.
The U.S. and Mexican delegations are scheduled to meet at the White House. Afterwards, a working lunch will be held at the Department of Justice headquarters.
