Ecuador’s Attorney General’s Office has reported that the death toll from a landslide that occurred last Sunday, March 26 in the municipality of Alausí, in the province of Chimborazo, has risen to 39 following the discovery of several more lifeless bodies in recent days.

With the removal of the body of Elian Q. R., the death toll of 39 people in the landslide in Alausí is confirmed. Once identified, the body was handed over to his relatives,» reads a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office on Friday.

In addition, the country’s Risk Management Secretariat indicated this week that an orange alert has been declared in the area that includes the communities of Casual and the neighborhoods of La Esperanza, Control Norte, Nueva Alausí, Pircapamba and Bua.

The total number of victims has risen to more than 1,000, while almost 2.5 kilometers of road have been affected, while more than 40 people were injured.
