The United States needs to stop encouraging war and start talking about peace. The European Union needs to start talking about peace so that we can convince Putin and Zelenski that peace is in everyone’s interest and that war, for the moment, is only in the interest of both,» said Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Saturday.

In addition, Lula assured in a press conference held at the end of his visit to Beijing, China, that he does not fear a negative reaction from the United States to his position regarding the war in Ukraine because »there are no reasons» for it.

»When I talk to the United States I am not worried about what China will think of my conversation with them. I am talking about the sovereign interests of my country. When I come to talk to China, I am not worried about what the United States will think», explained the Brazilian president, who leaves »very satisfied» with his visit to the Asian country.

During this visit, Lula and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, signed a joint declaration which, among other points, highlights the idea of strengthening trade in local currencies beyond the dollar, or that of a negotiated solution to the war in Ukraine.

On the eve of the meeting, President Lula already questioned why all countries »are obliged» to trade in dollars and whether it was not time to »innovate». In this sense, he highlighted the value of the New BRICS Development Bank as an institution from which to trade and finance through local currencies.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, both leaders agreed that dialogue and negotiation »are the only viable ways out of the crisis» and that all efforts in this direction should be supported.

Both leaders agreed to expand their relations in digital matters, academic exchanges and energy transition.

»Our strategic relationship is getting better and better and we don’t need to break relations or fight with anyone. Brazil has to pursue its interests for whatever is necessary and enable agreements with all countries. We do not have political or ideological options, we have the option of the national interest, the interest of the Brazilian people, the interest of the national industry, of our sovereignty», Lula stressed.
