German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s wife, Britta Ernst, resigned on Monday as education minister of the northeastern German state of Brandenburg.
Her resignation was confirmed by a state government spokeswoman, who said that the state’s prime minister, Dietmar Woidke, has accepted her resignation after years of criticism from the position and education associations.
Ernst has been at the helm of the state portfolio since 2017 and will now be replaced by Steffen Freiberg. Despite the criticism voiced even by members of the Brandenburg government coalition, Woidke has applauded his work and nuanced that »he knew how to pull it off even in difficult times».
I am sure that, in retrospect, his term of office will be associated with important decisions,» he said of the work of Ernst, of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
