Algerian President Abdelmayid Tebune signed Wednesday a presidential decree to pardon more than 8,900 prisoners on the occasion of Eid al Fitr, the end of the month of Ramadan, according to a statement from the Presidency.
The pardon will be granted to 8,985 prisoners who have been deprived of liberty and sentenced to sentences equal to or less than 12 months or who have yet to serve that time. In the case of those over 65 years of age, minors, pregnant women or mothers of children under three years of age, the period is extended to 18 months of sentence.
Excluded from the pardon are those convicted of terrorism, treason, espionage, murder, escape, creation of a criminal association, drug trafficking, as well as corruption offenses, according to the newspaper ‘Tout Sur L’Algerie’.
