Brazil’s Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes on Thursday asked the Federal Police to interrogate former Secretary of Institutional Security (GSI) General Marco Gonçalves Dias within 48 hours, following his resignation after new images of the January 8 assault were made public.
The press has published very serious images that indicate the incompetent performance of the authorities responsible for the internal security of the Planalto Palace, including an illicit and connivant omission of several GSI agents», the Supreme Court magistrate pointed out in his letter to the Police.
De Moraes asked the new acting head of the GSI, Ricardo Cappelli, to inform the Supreme Court within 24 hours about the identity of all the public officials, both civilian and military, who appear in these new images first broadcast by CNN Brazil.
At the same time, he urged the Government to report on the degree of compliance with the two orders previously given on this case, such as obtaining the images from all the cameras of the Federal District and the interrogation of all those involved in those attacks on the institutions, in Brasília.
The images disclosed by CNN Brazil show, among other things, how the then secretary of the GSI, Gonçalves Dias, and other officials of the Secretariat of Security, walk among the assailants of the Planalto Palace, even offering them bottles of water and showing them the way out.
Hours after these images were made public, Gonçalves Dias — who was the only military man in Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s cabinet — and his number two, Ricardo José Nigri, presented their resignation. In their defense, they allege that they were redirecting the assailants to a point where they would be arrested.
