The U.S. Supreme Court has postponed until Friday a ruling on restrictions against mifespristone, one of two drugs used for medical abortions, ordered by a Texas court.
Justice Samuel Alito announced in a brief statement that the stay on the measure decreed by Texas will be extended for another two days, so the court will not meet to make a decision until Friday, according to NBC News.
This new stay comes after the court postponed making a decision on Saturday. The nine members will have to vote by a five-to-four majority to permanently remove the restrictive measure.
The decision by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kaczmaryk in Texas on the use of the abortion pill is part of a new legal battle that, according to human rights organizations, undermines women’s reproductive and sexual rights.
The medication for voluntary termination of pregnancy, which is the main method used nationally, has once again put access to abortion in the spotlight after the repeal in 2022 of the ‘Roe versus Wade’ ruling, which recognized this right.
The use of mifepristone was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) more than two decades ago after it was shown to be safe and effective in terminating a pregnancy.
