Russia’s Defense Ministry announced Thursday that it has ended the surprise inspection of its Pacific fleet involving more than 25,000 military personnel under the command of Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolai Evmenov.
»The sudden check confirmed the high readiness of the Pacific Fleet forces to solve problems and repel aggression of a potential enemy from the ocean in all directions,» the ministry said in a statement, Interfax reported.
Thus, the Russian Pacific Fleet forces involved »are returning to their bases». In total, more than 25,000 military personnel took part in the surprise inspection, which also involved 89 aircraft and helicopters, as well as 167 ships, including twelve submarines.
During the course of the inspection, the forces had to repel air strikes with missiles, fire torpedoes, as well as artillery shells and naval missiles. They also carried out submarine search and destroy drills, among others.
In addition, the forces involved in the inspection simulated the response to an enemy landing attempt on Sakhalin Island, off the eastern coast of Russia, and the southern part of the Kuril Islands, in dispute with Japan.
