Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has refrained from signing the recent anti-LGBT law passed by Parliament within the deadline and has proposed »improvements» to the text, which would now be under review again in the House.
As reported on his official Twitter profile by Emmanuel Dombo, deputy of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, the legislation is being reviewed and »improvements» to the text will be proposed after a series of consultations with the president himself.
Parliament approved last March 21 the text, which criminalizes the mere identification as an LGTBI person, with punishments that can reach life imprisonment and even the death penalty if it is classified as ‘aggravated homosexuality’, in cases where it is considered that there is no consent or coercion.
In addition, the law, criticized by the United Nations, as well as by the European Union and countries such as the United States, provides that those who promote same-sex relationships could face up to 20 years in prison.
