The Rincón de la Vieja volcano, located in northern Costa Rica, erupted this Friday, and authorities have urged the population to exercise extreme caution in the area for the next few days.
The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) reported that the eruption took place on Friday at 15.50 (local time) and caused a column of smoke that rose 2,000 meters above the crater.
The National Emergency Commission (CNE) is not aware of any personal or infrastructure damage, but has urged citizens to stay away from the surrounding rivers »since there could be a descent of material», even during the whole weekend.
