Taliban leader Mullah Hebatullah Ajundzada has ordered Afghanistan’s judges to fully apply ‘sharia’ — or Islamic law — against those who commit a series of punishments that could even be punishable by public amputations or stoning.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Twitter that after meeting with the judges, Mullah Ajundzada reminded them that they must apply the punishments set out in Islamic law for those who commit crimes ranging from robbery, kidnapping or sedition.

«Mullah Hebatullah, upon meeting with the judges, told them to properly investigate the cases of thieves, kidnappers and seditionists» and that in «those cases that have reached all the requirements of the punishment of the ‘sharia’,» the judges «are obliged to implement the punishment,» he has written on Twitter.

Another Taliban spokesman, Yusef Ahmadi, told Tolo News that those involved in murders, kidnappings and robberies should be «punished» in this way.

It is not the first time that the Taliban leader, defends the need to apply «totally» the ‘sharia’ in Afghanistan since the fundamentalists took power in August 2021 after the flight of President Ashraf Ghani.

The fundamentalists have installed a government marked by a lack of women and representatives of other political and ethnic groups, while facing domestic and international criticism for limiting the rights of the population, especially women and girls.
