The Mexican Foreign Ministry has announced the resumption of bilateral relations with Turkey through negotiations for a free trade agreement between the two countries.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who is visiting Ankara, has discussed with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavasoglu, the state of their bilateral relations, as well as international issues.

Both have reiterated their commitment to deepen their strategic partnership. «This is about a constructive policy, about investments, about development and technology, about innovation. That is what the relationship between Turkey and Mexico is all about,» Ebrard explained.

«There are many fields of common work: migration, culture, investments, working together for development initiatives (…). Mexico sees all this with very good eyes, including the Free Trade Agreement or Treaty that we can have between the two economies, it is convenient for both countries,» said the Mexican minister, according to a statement issued by the Ministry.

For his part, Cavusoglu has indicated that the adoption of a joint declaration «will further improve» relations between the two countries «in all areas». «Our goal is to reach a trade volume of 5 billion dollars,» he said in a message on his Twitter profile.

With this goal in mind, the ministers have agreed to organize a second meeting «as soon as possible» to conduct a «comprehensive review of the economic relationship and identify steps to further increase trade and investment,» assuring that the deadline for the meeting would be 2024.
