Scottish first minister encourages using national election as referendum for independence

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has claimed that the Supreme Court’s refusal to hold a referendum in the region has «rejuvenated» the independence movement, so she must press ahead to use the next general election as a ‘de facto’ referendum on whether to leave the UK.

«Because for the people of Scotland, the result means this: the myth that the United Kingdom is a voluntary union of nations has been comprehensively and permanently shattered because of the behavior of the Westminster parties,» he has defended on Friday night during the annual St. Andrew’s Day dinner, according to ‘The Herald’.

In that sense, he has assured that the decision taken by the High Court will not favor either Labour or Conservatives since the Scottish independence movement «is not going to disappear». «In fact, it is growing. It is getting stronger. And it is winning. Because it is now as much a democratic movement as it is an independence movement,» he has argued.

For the prime minister, the Supreme Court ruling has triggered «the week that changed the pro-independence campaign». Since, according to her, they only defend making a decision in a democratic way and the voluntary union in the United Kingdom has become a «Westminster control system».

Therefore, he defended that the majority of residents in Scotland «believe in the right of the people who live here to choose their own future».

After which he insisted that the equal partnership in which the vast majority of Britons believe «it is very clear» that it can only be achieved through independence.

Sturgeon wanted to bring out the polls again on October 19, 2023, but the central executive considers that the independence debate was settled with the consultation of September 2014. The Scottish authorities consider that the scenario is now very different, with the United Kingdom outside the European Union.
