The president of Burma’s National Unity Government, Duwa Lashi La, has refused Friday to hold talks with representatives of the military junta that has ruled the country since the coup d’état that took place on February 1, 2021 until the military «stops killing civilians» and leaves political life.

«People have already expressed their desire not to support dialogue with the junta at any cost. However, for the sake of the future of our country, the National Unity Government is seeking the necessary way forward,» he asserted before stressing the need to abolish the 2018 Constitution.

Thus, he has pointed out that the Army «should not interfere in the distribution of humanitarian aid to the citizens» and has affirmed that the international community «should serve as a mediator». «We have already taken into account that the junta will remain in power at all costs despite the death of civilians or even if the country collapses,» he asserted, according to information from the newspaper ‘The Irrawaddy’.

The president of the parallel government formed by the National League for Democracy (NLD) after the elections of November 2020 has also pointed out that «to put pressure on the regime and make it sit at the table, anti-aircraft defense systems are necessary to be able to face the junta’s bombardments against the resistance forces».

«If we had these kinds of weapons we could win in six months. They would have to listen to us. They would also accept ASEAN’s proposals and would heed the demands of the United States, the European Union and other countries,» he explained.

In this sense, he asked for international support to the resistance and stressed that «if they received the same support as Ukraine from the United States and the EU, the suffering of the Burmese people would cease at once».
