U.S. President Joe Biden pledged again Wednesday to ban assault rifles on the anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Biden, who spoke at the 10th annual national vigil for victims of gun violence, said he is renewing his push to ban such weapons.

«Our work continues to limit the number of bullets that can be in a cartridge, the type of gun that can be bought and sold, the attempt to ban assault weapons, a whole range of things that are just common sense, just plain common sense,» Biden said.

«We did it before, you may remember, in the 1990s we did it. And guess what, it worked. The number of violent mass murders that were reduced was significant, a lot of people’s lives were saved. We can do it again,» he said, referring to the ban on semi-automatic weapons imposed between 1994 and 2004.

In this sense, the U.S. president has assured that he can achieve the approval of «the most important gun law in 30 years», however, he has admitted that this is not enough.

On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza, a 20-year-old man, entered Sandy Hook School (Newtown, Connecticut state) armed with a semi-automatic assault rifle. He shot and killed 20 children and six teachers in what is now the largest school massacre in the history of the country.
