A group of unidentified armed individuals attacked a guesthouse in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Monday, with no information so far on possible casualties or claims of responsibility for the assault.
Residents of the Shahr-e-Nau area told the Afghan television channel Tolo TV that an explosion was reported in the area, followed by heavy gunfire. Sources quoted by the channel 1TV have indicated that the target of the attack is the above-mentioned lodging, popular among Chinese visitors. At the moment it is not known if the assailants have managed to break into the premises.
The incident comes a day after the Afghan Deputy Prime Minister, Mohamad Abas Stanikzai, met in Kabul with the Chinese ambassador, Wang Yu, to assure him that the Taliban guarantee the safety of diplomatic representatives and facilities in the country after the recent attacks against the Pakistani and Russian embassies.
