Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic on Sunday criticized Germany for taking a stand against the deployment of the Serbian Army to protect the population of northern Kosovo, calling the German statements «absurd».

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had described as «unacceptable» the initiative announced the day before by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, who is obliged to ask permission from the NATO mission, KFOR, for any military deployment in the independent Kosovo, the scene this weekend of an upsurge in tensions.

Brnabic, following this, has recalled that in the last announcement of the foreign ministers of the G7 countries, which was held in May 2022, to resolve various crises in the world, the strict implementation of the respective resolutions of the UN Security Council was established.

«Now, surprisingly, the German Foreign Ministry explicitly says that the resolution (…) stipulating that Serbia has the right to request the return of a certain number of its security forces to Kosovo should be ignored because it is ‘unacceptable,» she has expressed quoting the words of the German diplomat.

In this sense, the Serbian premier criticized the criteria by which the West chooses which resolutions to respect, following Baerbock’s statements.

«In terms of international law and stability, what criteria do you use to decide which UN resolution should be respected and which should be ignored,» she said.

«For example, in the case of Libya (…) it should be respected, but in the case of Serbia (…) it should be ignored? Impressive level of absurdity,» Brnabic has criticized.

Thus, he called for respect for international law and UN resolutions. «What the Serbs in Kosovo are longing for is peace and stability. We would not mind seeing some respect for international law, the UN Charter, the resolutions of the UN Security Council…», he said.

«One last thing: there would be no tensions to be reduced if (Kosovar Prime Minister Albin) Kurti would respect the agreements and not unilaterally breach them,» he concluded.

The north of Kosovo is now in the middle of an institutional vacuum after the boycott of the Kosovo Serb municipalities and the president of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has announced the postponement of the local elections in view of the chaotic political scenario.

To this must be added outbreaks of violence such as the one that occurred last night against a patrol of the EU civilian mission, EULEX, with no casualties to regret.
