The well-known Iranian actress Tarané Alidusti has been detained by the authorities in connection with the recent wave of protests following the death of a young woman after she was arrested for improperly wearing a veil in Tehran.
The actress was detained on Saturday afternoon for «spreading false information and supporting counter-revolutionary circles,» the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported. Such a charge usually carries a lengthy prison sentence.
Alidusti is one of the highest paid and most internationally known Iranian actresses. She recently posted a photo of herself on Instagram without a veil to express her support for the protests.
The gesture was applauded inside and outside Iran, but it means putting her career at risk, as wearing the Islamic veil is mandatory in the country for women.
