83 percent of Peruvian citizens are of the opinion that the Peruvian Government should bring forward the general elections, while only 13 percent support that President Dina Boluarte should remain in office and finish her term in 2026, according to a survey by the Peruvian opinion poll IEP collected by ‘La República’.

Thus, seven out of ten people polled disagree with the fact that Boluarte has taken over as head of state after the dismissal of Pedro Castillo, who was deposed by the Congress last December 7 in a motion of censure, all this after announcing her intention to dissolve the legislative chamber and to establish a government of exception.

Disapproval of the Peruvian president, who has been in office for 11 days, is similar in both rural areas (77 percent) and urban areas (74 percent). The only place in the country where she has more support is in the metropolitan area of Lima, where 35 percent are in favor of her.

The survey also reflects the opinion of the participants on the state of democracy. In general, there is a high level of social dissatisfaction with the functioning of the Peruvian state, with 80 percent being dissatisfied or very dissatisfied.

However, 60 percent of Peruvians say that the political crisis does not justify the decision to close Parliament, a decision that only 34 percent of citizens agree with, according to the newspaper.

In addition, another 60 percent would not justify the military taking power through a coup d’état, while 38 percent would favor the measure.

CASTILLO, WORST VALUED BY PERUVIANS Although former president Pedro Castillo achieved 31 percent support before the attempted dissolution of Congress, in the new survey only 26 percent consider his administration as good (19.5 percent) or very good (6.8 percent).

Forty-two percent of those polled believe that the former president’s performance was very bad (22 percent) or bad (20 percent). Another 29 percent believe that his government was neither good nor bad.

Nevertheless, certain parts of the population support to a greater or lesser extent his decision to dissolve congress. Support is highest in rural areas, with up to 52 percent support, while 48 percent of urban citizens are in favor of Castillo’s attempt to dissolve Congress.

When asked about the reasons why citizens are demonstrating in different parts of the country, 71 percent believe that the main reason is for an early election. In second place, 40 percent were in support of former President Pedro Castillo, while only 15 percent were in favor of Congress.
