At least eight people died and 16 were injured on Monday when a bus fell into a ravine in the Peruvian province of Chumbivilcas, in the department of Cusco, in the south of the country.
At around 6.30 a.m. (local time) a public transport bus fell down a cliff after leaving the road, spinning over itself until it stopped 50 meters away, as detailed by the regional police of Cusco in statements to the Andina news agency.
The incident has claimed the lives of at least eight people and injured 16 others, who have been taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The bus, belonging to the Olivare transport company, frequently covers the route from the city of Cusco to the town of Chamaca, located in the Andes mountain range. However, due to the road blockade by protests taking place throughout the country, the driver decided to take an alternative route to reach the destination, according to ‘La República’.
The Peruvian Police have initiated the identification of the deceased and injured. It has also launched an investigation to determine what happened.
