The U.S. State Department said Monday that the COVID casualty toll reported by Chinese authorities «is of concern to the rest of the world.»
«The number of victims of the virus is of concern to the rest of the world given the size of China’s GDP, given the size of China’s economy. Not only is it good for China to be in a stronger position against COVID, but it’s also good for the rest of the world,» Department spokesman Ned Price explained at a press conference.
Price said the United States «continues to provide vaccines and to help countries get through the acute phase of the virus.» «We certainly hope that will soon be the case in the People’s Republic of China as well,» he added.
The spokesman, who pointed out that the conclusions have to be pronounced by the epidemiological agency, warned that the virus has the potential to mutate and pose a threat to people everywhere.
«Every time there is death and disease anywhere in the world, we want a situation like that to come to an end,» Price said.
Health authorities in China report a surge in the number of reported cases of COVID-19, reaching highs since the start of the pandemic.
At the end of November, the population took to the streets in major cities to demand more freedoms in a blow to President Xi Jinping, who was even asked to resign after months of confinements and mandatory quarantines.
The problems caused by the establishment of these regulations, which have led to the inaction of the authorities in emergency situations, have caused an already extremely tense situation to explode in a country where large-scale protests are not common.
