The former first lady of Peru Lilia Paredes and wife of former president Pedro Castillo has welcomed the solidarity of the Mexican government, which has accepted the request for asylum in the country of the former president’s family.
«Dear brothers and sisters of my homeland: I am very grateful for the solidarity that my family has received. I thank the Government of Mexico and you for your permanent concern. We are living a very difficult moment, but we are united and your permanent support strengthens us,» Paredes said in a statement on the social network Twitter.
In this sense, the former Peruvian first lady called on Human Rights organizations, both nationally and internationally, to «protect the rights of our compatriots», referring to the clashes between security forces and demonstrators.
He has also asked for «special attention» to the health of Pedro Castillo, who has been incarcerated in Barbadillo Prison, in Ate, on the outskirts of Lima, since December 17, after the Judiciary ordered 18 months of preventive detention against him.
