The Qatari government on Sunday conveyed its «extreme concern» over the Taliban’s decision to ban women from working in NGOs.
«The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses the need to respect the right of women to work, as the freedom to choose and accept a job is a human right recognized by international conventions and must be abided by all countries in the world,» a statement reads.
In this regard, the Qatari authorities have reiterated their support to «all spectrums of the Afghan people to obtain all their rights».
«Also, the State of Qatar calls on the interim government to review its decision to allow women to work in the various jobs available to them in the organizations, so that they contribute to the distribution and flow of humanitarian aid to the Afghan people,» the missive continued.
Qatar has acted as the venue for peace talks between the former Afghan government and the Taliban, who held a political office in Doha during failed peace negotiations with the United States.
In addition to its ties with the Taliban, Qatar has in recent years been considered the unofficial interlocutor of the United States.
