The human rights group ‘Tunisian Forum for Social and Economic Rights’ (FTDES) has condemned Sunday the Tunisian government’s decision to deport a group of 25 migrants who had been evacuated from a dismantled refugee camp.
FTDES has «expressed its outrage at the Prime Minister’s decision, the content of his inhumane and oppressive communication, and his discriminatory expressions,» reads a statement, referring to the expulsion of migrants coming from several African countries and fleeing violence in Libya in 2011.
In addition, the forum has warned «against any attempt to impose a solution by force on a vulnerable group» and renewed «the call for an exceptional solution» that «responds to the aspirations of asylum seekers.»
«Day by day, the Tunisian government’s policy becomes more brutal, not only towards its citizens, but also towards refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, due to suspicious incidents of drowning at sea, illegal arrests and targeted security campaigns,» the missive continued.
The organization also stressed that the authorities have «political and moral responsibility for the physical and psychological health of asylum seekers».
Civil society organizations have appealed to all parts of the Tunisian government, national organizations, the European Union and all countries that were party to the Libyan crisis «in an attempt to find a solution, but in vain».
Since 2017, migrants have been living in a youth center in Marsa, a suburb of the capital, after being evacuated from the Choucha refugee camp, when the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) decided to close it «without resolving all situations.»
