Estonian Deputy Foreign Minister Mart Volmer has recommended the Ukrainian authorities to abandon their aspirations to achieve Russia’s expulsion from the United Nations as it is an issue that has hardly any international support.
Volmer emphasized that Estonia has always sided with Ukraine in calling for sanctions against Russia, and stressed that the request for its expulsion is going in a «very good and correct» direction.
«In this case it should be taken into account that, unfortunately, Ukraine does not have much international support on this issue,» the Estonian diplomatic representative lamented in statements to the national radio station ERR.
Volmer acknowledged that Russia’s expulsion from the UN Security Council and other UN bodies would be possible if more states would align themselves with Ukraine’s position, which considers that Moscow took advantage of the collapse of the Soviet Union to occupy seats in these bodies.
«It doesn’t seem very doable and something worth spending a lot of time on now,» insisted Volmer, who also believes that, should the matter come to the Security Council table, Russia would make its veto right effective and block it.
In fact, the Estonian representative believes that it is precisely this aspect that makes most countries not to consider the possibility of expelling Russia right now, as they do not think it is a «realistic» possibility, taking into account Moscow’s authority.
«Russia should be hindered where it is really feasible, where there is some support for it, where we can push it away from the decision-making processes in the world,» the Estonian deputy foreign minister concluded.
Ukraine has recently acknowledged its intention to try to expel Russia from all UN bodies, especially the Security Council, arguing that it benefited from the Soviet Union’s position and that its annexation to the body did not comply with what is written in the UN Charter.
