Peru’s Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation against Peru’s president, Dina Boluarte, as well as against three members of her Executive, to clarify the death of 28 civilians during clashes between security forces and demonstrators during the protests that shook the country in December.
Specifically, the State Attorney General, Patricia Benavides, has ordered the initiation of preliminary proceedings against Boluarte, the current Prime Minister, Alberto Otarola, in his capacity as Minister of Defense; the former Minister of the Interior Cesar Cervantes, and the former Prime Minister Pedro Angulo, reported ‘La Republica’.
«The Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered to carry out preliminary proceedings regarding the complaints filed against the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte; Alberto Otárola, in his capacity as Minister of Defense; César Cervantes, former Minister of the Interior, and others,» a statement from the Public Prosecutor’s Office reads.
The accusation also includes high-ranking police officers, among them the chief of the Macro Police Region of Ayacucho, Antero Mejía Escajadillo, and the general commander of the Second Military Infantry Brigade of Ayacucho, Jesús Vera Ipenza.
The investigation is the result of a complaint filed by several lawyers before the Human Rights, Interculturality and Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office of Ayacucho, a municipality in whose airport a large part of the total number of demonstrators killed at national level lost their lives.
Meanwhile, the President has approved the decision of the Prosecutor’s Office to initiate preliminary proceedings regarding the events that took place during the demonstrations.
Likewise, the President assured that she will provide all the necessary facilities «for the prompt clarification of the events» that occurred during her first weeks as head of state.
