Police in Virginia have taken a six-year-old boy into custody after he fired a gun at a teacher at an elementary school, leaving the injured teacher in critical condition.
The child allegedly fired a gun at a teacher, in her 30s, when both were in a classroom at Richneck School in the Newport News district, facts that have been described as intentional by the chief of the Virginia Police, Steve Drew, in statements reported by CNN.
«The individual is a 6-year-old student. Right now he is in police custody (…) We have been in contact with our Commonwealth’s Attorney and some other entities to help us get better services to this young man,» Drew said in a press conference.
The teacher is in critical condition and her injuries are considered life-threatening, although there is «some improvement» in the last update received by the police, who have stated that «this was not an accidental shooting».
In this sense, the chief of the Virginia Police has assured that there was an altercation between the teacher and the student, who had the firearm, and that only one bullet was fired.
«We will do the investigation, there are questions we will want to ask and find out. I want to know where that firearm came from, what the situation was,» Drew added, according to the aforementioned agency.
The elementary school where the incident took place will remain closed for the next school day, as announced by the superintendent of Newport News Public Schools, George Parker.
«I am shocked and disheartened. We need to educate our children and we need to keep them safe,» Parker said during a press conference.
«We need community support, continued support, to make sure that guns are kept out of the hands of young people and I’m sounding like a broken record today, because I keep reiterating that: that we need to keep guns out of the hands of our young people,» the superintendent added.
