The Hong Kong District Court has sentenced ten people arrested in Yau Ma Tei during the 2019 wave of anti-government protests to between 50 and 52 months in prison.
The convicts are between 21 and 31 years old and had previously been convicted for the November 18, 2019 Hong Kong Polytechnic University riots, reports Hong Kong television RTHK.
The new conviction includes that more than 250 Molotov cocktails were thrown at police officers during the riots in a series of «extremely violent» attacks.
The judge acknowledges that there is no evidence that the ten defendants committed unlawful acts, nor did they actively participate in these events, but their mere presence «could have encouraged others».
The judge stressed that the defendants «have learned a hard lesson» and that there is little likelihood that they will commit this type of crime again.
