Poland’s Administration and Internal Affairs Committee on Tuesday postponed a meeting on the explosion of a Ukrainian gift at the headquarters of the National Police, which resulted in the injury of three people, including the commander-in-chief, Jaroslaw Szymczyk.
According to the head of the Committee, Wieslaw Szczepanski, the meeting was suspended due to the absence of Szymczyk himself, as well as that of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, Mariusz Kaminski, and that of a representative of the Prosecutor’s Office, the PAP news agency reported.
This Commission is tasked with investigating what happened in mid-December, when an explosion occurred at the National Police headquarters. Although at first it was suggested that the explosion was the result of a gift received from Ukraine, it was later revealed that the detonation was caused by a grenade launcher that was not properly used.
At Tuesday’s meeting the Minister of Interior and Administration was expected to provide information on the causes and circumstances surrounding the explosion at the Police Headquarters, as well as the Government’s response with the competent bodies.
«If General Szymczyk was so eager to inform in the media about all his activities regarding what happened, I hope that he will share this knowledge also with the Commission,» Szczepanski conveyed last week, inviting the Police Commander-in-Chief to attend the committee session.
From the opposition Civic Coalition (KO) have accused both Szymczyk and the government itself of trying to «hide something» by not coming to testify before the Internal Affairs Committee. «We will investigate the matter,» said MP Konrad Frysztak.
Szymczyk himself already detailed a few days after the incident that, after his visit to Kiev, he received from his Ukrainian counterpart two disabled grenade launchers modified to be used as a Bluetooth speaker. However, when he went to handle one of them, it exploded.
