The Popular Party has demanded this Tuesday that the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, express a public denunciation of the arrest and imprisonment of the governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, and propose sanctions against Bolivia for this case.
In a parliamentary question, the ‘popular’ MEP Leopoldo López Gil demands «restrictive measures» against members of the Bolivian government led by Luis Arce for «being responsible for the illegitimate imprisonment» of the governor of the department of Santa Cruz.
The PP demands Borrell a clear position on this case, after assuring that the erosion of the rule of law in Bolivia «is a reality derived from the progressive lack of separation of powers». «Political persecution must cease,» said López Gil.
Camacho has declared himself a «political prisoner» of the ruling party, Movimiento al Socialismo, and has affirmed that his detention for alleged participation in the 2019 political crisis, «is a case invented by his government».
The opposition leader is the governor of the richest region of Bolivia and historically opposed to MAS governments, scene in the last month of new protests and blockades, this time to oppose the census law of the Arce government.
His arrest is motivated by his role in the violent demonstrations and protests that took place after the opposition, supported by the Armed Forces, pressured former president Evo Morales to renounce his victory in the October 2019 elections.
