A court in Yemen’s Huthi insurgency on Friday began the trial of four activists accused of criticizing the militias and in which the defendants could end up being sentenced to death.
The trial was denounced by Yemen’s Minister of Information, Moamar al Eryani, who, in a statement published by the Asharq al Awsat newspaper, compared the trial to «the practices of repression exercised by Iran», an ally of the insurgency.
The detainees have been identified as Ahmad Hajar, Mustafa al Mumary, Hamud al Mesbahi and Ahmad al Law, all YouTube personalities who had criticized the Huthi authorities, who have controlled the country’s capital, Sana’a, since the end of 2014, in the outbreak of a war that has plunged the country into the world’s biggest humanitarian catastrophe.
The minister assures that all the accused have rejected the charges and that the threat of the death sentence is nothing more than an attempt to intimidate the press.
