At least eight people have been killed in an explosion Tuesday aboard an oil tanker at a shipyard on the Mae Klong River in central Thailand’s Samut Songjram province.
«Rescue teams pulled eight bodies from the wreckage of a tanker that exploded and caught fire yesterday at the shipyard in Samut Songjram province,» authorities said, according to the Thaiger news portal.
The explosion, which took place at around 9:17 a.m. (local time), could be heard several kilometers away, and the shock wave caused damage to some houses near the area, as reported by several witnesses.
The tanker, with a capacity of 6,500 tons, was undergoing maintenance work, so its tanks were empty. The authorities have opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
