The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, has ironized on Wednesday with the investigations opened in the European Parliament for an alleged bribery scheme, saying that «soon» the arrested MEPs will be enough to form a soccer team.
«At this rate, there will soon be enough corrupt MEPs behind bars to form their own soccer team in prison.Who knows? They may try to make it to Euro 2024,» said Orbán, who since the scandal broke has missed no opportunity to point out alleged excesses in Brussels.
Since the Qatar bribery scandal erupted in December, the Hungarian prime minister has used it to reproach the alleged corruption of institutions that have been singling out Hungary for alleged backsliding on the rule of law for years.
The Belgian Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that the former Socialist MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, the main defendant in the scheme, will provide details on the ‘modus operandi’, the countries involved and the names of those who succumbed to corruption to the Belgian justice system, under an agreement reached in exchange for a reduced sentence.
