The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has defended this Monday to maintain European unity in the supply of armaments to Ukraine, after Germany postponed last Friday the decision on the shipment of battle tanks at the meeting at the Ramstein air base.
The meeting, which brought together a coalition of more than 40 countries that support Kiev, served for numerous countries to announce more military aid to Ukraine but did not clear the blockade on the supply of German-made ‘Leopard’ tanks.
«Spain is going to try to maintain unity and to take the measures that Ukraine needs at this moment to face the great challenge it has», said Albares without wanting to enter into Berlin’s decision and insisting that the unity of the Europeans is «the best tool» that the European Union has to face the «enormous challenge» that the Russian aggression against Ukraine represents.
In this regard, he pointed out that the Government is committed to contribute at all times what is best for Ukraine in order to bring peace back to the country.
After stating last week that «it is not on the table» the possibility of Spain sending its ‘Leopard’ tanks, Albares did not specify what the situation is after the meeting in Ramstein which monopolized precisely the debate on the suitability of sending battle tanks to Kiev, in the midst of international pressure on Germany to give the green light, as manufacturer, to the re-export of these systems.
