German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday welcomed the new chapter in bilateral relations with Brazil under Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva following the end of Jair Bolsonaro’s cabinet.
«We are all excited that Brazil is back on the world stage,» Scholz assured in Brasilia after meeting with Brazil’s new president who was sworn in on January 1.
«You have been missed, dear Lula,» the German leader, who is currently on a four-day trip in South America, has expressed, adding that he hopes for a good and long cooperation, after which Lula has spontaneously embraced Scholz.
The Brazilian politician took over from the Liberal Party leader after defeating him in a disputed runoff in October. Bolsonaro largely isolated his country internationally, effectively cutting off German-Brazilian consultations.
Scholz has therefore promised him his support in the fight against climate change and the Amazon rainforest, one of Lula’s trump cards during his campaign against the measures of the previous government.
Likewise, the German politician has assured Lula of his support in the face of the assault on government buildings in Brasilia on January 8 by thousands of Bolsonaro supporters who refused to accept his electoral defeat. «Democrats must stand united,» the German chancellor has maintained. The riots were «a reminder that we must do everything we can to defend democracy,» he has zanelled.
