The Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, said Friday that they have contacted the Government of Georgia to offer to host the medical treatment of the former president of that country Mikheil Saakashvili, increasingly topical in recent weeks due to his precarious state of health.
«We have proposed to the Georgian government that Mikhail Saakashvili could be treated in Poland,» Morawiecki said from Brussels, from where he warned Georgia that if it expects a positive response to its European aspirations, it should take this offer from Warsaw seriously, reports the Polish TVP channel.
«The worst could happen,» predicted Morawiecki, who joins the voices that in recent weeks have warned about the situation of Saakashvili, who also has Ukrainian citizenship. His compatriot President Volodimir Zelenski has also denounced the matter and accused Georgia of «killing him on the spot».
Saakashvili, the third Georgian president and the first of them to carry out a series of reforms to move closer to Europe, has been serving a six-year prison sentence since 2021 for a crime of abuse of power. Since his imprisonment he has started several hunger strikes and has denounced a poisoning attempt.
As a result of his dual nationality, Kiev has asked the European Union to put pressure on Georgia to release Saakashvili and send him abroad for medical treatment.
