At least 15 military personnel have been killed and nine others abducted in an attack by suspected members of the rebel Coalition Patriots for Change (CPC) in the Central African town of Ndah, amid an upsurge in fighting in the area with the Central African Republic Army (CAR).
The clashes followed those recorded at the end of January in this area, which resulted in the death of seven mercenaries of the Wagner Group, owned by an oligarch close to the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
According to information gathered by the news portal Corbeau News, the rebels withdrew after the clashes in the locality, although this Tuesday they have launched an offensive against the positions of the Army in Ndah, which is now in their power.
The Central African authorities have not yet commented on these clashes in Ndah, scene in April 2022 of the death of numerous civilians allegedly at the hands of the Wagner Group, which led the United Nations to open an investigation.
The presence of Wagner’s mercenaries in the country was requested by the Central African president, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, to support the army’s operations against the CPC, led by the former president and rival of the current government, François Bozizé.
The Wagner Group has sent mercenaries to several African countries in recent years, including Libya, Mali and CAR, which has raised suspicions among several Western countries, especially the United States and France, about Moscow’s involvement in several conflicts on the continent.
